Conversation with the chiropractor
What are some of the most common work-related injuries you see? And how do you treat them?
Low back pain and neck pain are some of the most common issues from work. Sitting for long hours in front of the computer has become the norm because of technology and recently Work From Home (WFH). This new way of working brings along pain, difficulty sleeping at night, and waking up with stiffness and aches. Another huge side effect we’re seeing is faster degeneration of the spine in people who are only in their twenties, thirties, or forties!
The key to finding the most effective treatment is by identifying the root cause of your problem through assessments. After that, our chiropractors use safe spinal adjustments to improve spine health specific to your issues, and advice on what you should focus on (at work/home, when sleeping, stretches, lifestyle changes). Our physiotherapists treat using motor control and strengthening exercises, muscle release techniques, and provide you with a home exercise programe downloadable right to your phone so that the positive changes last long.
What is the common spine related problems for children among your patients? And is there some advice you can give to concerned parents?
Scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) and flat feet! When talking about just the physical impact of children sitting slouched in front of screens longer than what is necessary, it can be quite serious. Children’s bodies were meant to move around in different environments to be able to develop the movement patterns needed by the brain to grow healthy joints and muscles. When there is a lot of sitting or slouching involved, the muscles and joints may not develop as well, which can lead to scoliosis or flat feet - causing problems further in the future during adulthood.
It is inevitable that at some point in a young child’s life, they will be exposed to screen time. Schools are using it now at an even younger age, and mobile devices or iPads are everywhere! Look into the chair and table that your child is sitting at. Make sure that it is ergonomic enough so that it places less strain on your child’s body. Also, check the backpack that your child is using. We can’t avoid all the heavy textbooks needed for school, but we can make sure that it can distribute the load well when being carried.
How do you feel about the awareness of ergonomics here in Malaysia?
Pretty low. People take ergonomics lightly because of a common mindset that, “Our ancestors never needed such things before and they were doing just fine.” The problem with that is the way that our ancestors lived and the way that we live now is VERY different. They used to work under the sun to provide food for their families and were very strong. Commuting in the past also involved a significant more amount of walking.
However, with more of us driving to work adding to the ever increasing traffic jams and considering most of us sit in an air-conditioned room for most of the week, it is no wonder we’re seeing more and more aches and pains as a result of how we’re living now! We need to do better in our education of how we can treat our bodies better so that we can reduce the chances of future pain and regret.
Why do you recommend using ergonomic furniture?
We often see people injure themselves in the gym and come to us for treatment, asking us, “Why did I still get injured when I have been going to the gym 3 times a week as recommended by physicians?” The answer is because we spend 8-10 hours sitting at work everyday, and then expect the 1-2 hours in the gym a few times a week to mitigate those negative effects.
It makes more sense to adjust what we do in those 8-10 hours at work everyday so that the stress on our spine, joints, and muscles are much less, which includes changing our furniture and environment into something more ergonomic. It’s helping our body to help itself!

Partnership with Ergoland
Ergoland has definitely been in the market for a long time, which is difficult if you are not a reputable brand with a good track record. Their understanding of what ergonomics is definitely helps the community to put ‘knowledge’ into ‘practice’ when people come to them to find out which chair, table or bag is right for them or their child.
One thing that we also appreciate is their sourcing of products that have eco-friendly manufacturing and are certified non-toxic, as well as repairing traded-in bags to be reused for charity. To be able to help ourselves and also the Earth at the same time issomething overlooked but highly needed in this time.
